Particle board products were successfully developed by the United States in the early 20th century and patented in 1905, but they were not officially put into production until the 1940s.In 1941, Germany established the world’s first particle board production plant of a certain scale in Bremen.

The raw material is dried spruce sawdust .In 1942, the German Plywood Factory AG and its collaborators established another particle board factory, using box forming and multi-laminating machines, the raw material is beech veneer processing residues .From 1942 to 1943, Germany established several very small particle board production plants one after another, with an annual output of 10,000T.In 1944, Swiss and American state-owned enterprises began to produce creative flower boards .In 1947, Belgium produced flax stalk scrap boards for the first time .In 1948, the Germans invented a continuous extruder, which used a vertical extruder to produce particle board .In 1952, an experimental horizontal extruder began operation in the United States .In 1953, a horizontal Chuanghua plate extruder with an annual production capacity of 33,000 to 40,000 m3 was designed .

In the early days of particle board production, the technology and equipment were relatively backward, and the output quality was relatively poor. It was only after the 1950s that there was greater development. Single-layer hot presses and continuous hot presses began to be used in particle board production .Before the 1970s, plywood dominated the production of wood-based panels, and the fiberboard industry also developed rapidly.

Although particle board began to spread in Europe, the Americas and Asia, the total production was still relatively small .In 1960, the world’s production of particle board accounted for only 10% of the total production of wood-based panels .After the 1970s, the world’s particle board industry entered a period of rapid development, and the technology of producing particle board by roller pressing was invented .According to statistics from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the world’s total particle board production reached 33 million m3 in 1976, accounting for 37% of the world’s total wood-based panel production. By 2004, the world’s total particle board production exceeded the 100 million m3 mark, reaching 100.503 million m3, accounting for 44.6% of the world’s total wood-based panel production, becoming the world’s highest-yielding wood-based panel product last year.
